ESCON 36/2 DC – A compact and powerful 4 quadrant PWM servo controller

Maxon’s NEW ESCON 36/2 DC is a 4-quadrant PWM servo controller for use with DC motors up to 72 W. A very fast digital current controller with an enormous bandwidth for optimal motor current/torque control. The drift-free yet extremely dynamic speed behavior enables a speed range of 1 to 150,000 rpm. Provides a wide range of functions, with fully configurable digital and analog inputs and outputs.

Digital Servo Controller for DC brush motors up to 72 Watts

When matched up with maxon’s range of motors, high demanding and dynamic drive solutions are possible. Additionally, it can be run in various operating modes (speed controller (closed loop), speed controller (open loop), current controller).

This ultra-compact servo controller is controlled by means of an analog set value. The value can be specified by means of analog voltage, an external or internal potentiometer, a defined value or by means of a PWM signal with variable duty cycle. Other functions include the ability to enable or disable the power stage depending on the direction of rotation, or to use speed ramps for acceleration and deceleration. The speed can be regulated by means of a digital incremental encoder (2-channel, with/without line driver), DC tacho or without encoder (IxR compensation).

Designed to be user-friendly with an easy start-up, no in-depth knowledge of drive technology is required. When the servo controller is connected to a PC via a USB port, it can easily and efficiently be configured with the “ESCON Studio” graphical user interface. During startup and configuration of the inputs and outputs, monitoring, data recording and diagnostics, the user has access to a large variety of functions and is assisted by user-friendly software wizards, as well as an automatic procedure for fine-tuning the controller. It comes fully equipped with everything that is needed. No additional external filters or motor chokes are required and pre-assembled cables for the startup are available as accessories.

The ESCON 36/2 DC has protective circuits against overcurrent, excess temperature, under- and over-voltage, against voltage transients and against short-circuits in the motor cable. It is equipped with protected digital inputs and outputs and an adjustable current limitation for protecting the motor and the load. The motor current and the actual speed of the motor shaft can be monitored by means of the analog output voltage.

The large range for the input voltage and the operating temperature allows flexible use in a variety of drive applications. With its exceptional efficiency of 95%, the inexpensive ESCON 36/2 DC is a first-class choice for mobile, highly efficient yet consumption-optimized applications.

SV7 Servo Drive from AMP with EtherNet/IP

The SV7-IP includes eight digital inputs, four digital outputs and two +/-10V analog inputs. The EtherNet/IP command set provides access to all drive control modes, I/O and parameters using EtherNet/IP class 3 explicit messaging. Q language programs stored in the drive can also be triggered over EtherNet/IP. This servo drive is the perfect solution for applications requiring connectivity to Rockwell/Allen Bradley PLCs.

High Speed: 10m/s and High Resolution: 1.2 Nanometers from a Miniature Sensor

The new Mercury II™ 6800Si encoder from MicroE Systems achieves ground-breaking speed and resolutions, all with industry-leading small sensor size. The digital SPI-format serial output achieves high speed with high resolution, many times higher than A-quad-B encoders. Linear applications can be up to 10m/s at 1.2nm resolution, and rotary up to 8.2M CPR at 6,000 RPM. This remarkable performance is accomplished using serial word communications with the motion controller. The serial word includes 35 bits for position, 9 bits for status (index, limits, and signal alarms) and CRC error checking and is transmitted directly from the encoder to the controller’s DSP. Up to 227,000 position reads per second are possible, supporting the highest servo loop update rates.

MicroE Systems' Mercury II 6800Si Linear Encoder

The Mercury II 6800Si sensor is only 8.2mm high, weighs just 3 grams and provides output resolution of 1.2 nanometers. The small, high-performance encoder system will enable a broad range of new capabilities in compact motion control stages and positioners through a combination of accurate nanometer-level positioning, compact system design, and unprecedented affordability for this level of performance. Applications include microscopy, life sciences, semiconductor equipment, automated optical inspection, fiber optics manufacturing, nano-positioning, instrumentation, laser process equipment, metrology and many more.

Capable of linear and rotary applications, Mercury II 6000’s exceptional cyclical error (short-travel accuracy) of ±20 nanometers provides the precise nano-positioning feedback and smooth velocity control of encoders costing 2-3 times more. Long-travel accuracy of ±1µm is achieved using glass scales.

Rotary / angle encoding with resolutions up to 268M CPR is also a standard feature of the encoder. The same sensor works in both linear and rotary applications, reducing design time and unique parts count for applications with both linear and rotary requirements. A vacuum version of the sensor is available with rating to 10-8 torr, and bake out at 150°C for 48 hours. Integral index, limits, low signal alarm, and status LED’s enhance Mercury II 6800Si’s usefulness in many motion control applications. Use of a standard D-sub connector, in conjunction with the miniature sensor, minimize system footprint.

In addition, you can transmit power though data cables: Power to vacuum devices is transmitted through the data cables, eliminating the need for extra feedthroughs. A Zaber T-DSUB9-P (included with kits) is used to splice the power into the data cable – it is connected to the data cable outside the vacuum chamber.

Galil’s DMC-300xx Pocket Motion Controller is Smart, Compact and Low Cost

ROCKLIN, CA — Galil Motion Control, an industry leader in motion control technology, is announcing the DMC-300xx Pocket Motion Controller Series, their latest generation, single-axis Ethernet motion controller. It combines a high performance motion controller and a 800Watt sine drive in a low cost, compact 3.9 in. x 5.0 in. x 1.5 in. package. The DMC-300xx is also available as a controller-only model which can be connected to a stepper or servo motor amplifier of any power range. Using a 32-bit RISC processor and improved power technology, the DMC-300xx provides higher speed, better power efficiency and smaller size than their prior generation controllers. The DMC-300xx is designed for single-axis motor control applications where compact size, low cost and remote location are important.

Galil's Pocket Motion Controller

The DMC-300xx is higher speed than Galil’s prior generation single-axis controllers; The 125 µs servo loop update time is twice as fast and the 15 MHz encoder frequency and 3 MHz stepper pulse output are 25% faster.

“A powerful new feature of the DMC-300xx is that it provides two 100Base-T Ethernet ports which can be daisy-chained,” said Lisa Wade, vice president of sales and marketing. “This allows multiple units to be connected without the use of an Ethernet hub.”

The DMC-30012 model is packaged with an 800 W amplifier for driving brushless servo motors at 20–80 VDC, up to 10 A continuous, 15 A peak. The fully digital, transconductance amplifier is a sinusoidally commutated brushless motor amplifier which minimizes torque ripple compared to drives using trapezoidal commutation. This is especially important for applications using low friction linear motors. The amplifier provides commands for initialization of the brushless motor using either hall sensors or encoder feedback.

Other features of the DMC-300xx motion controller include PID compensation with velocity and acceleration feedforward, non-volatile memory for user programs, multitasking for simultaneously running up to four programs, and I/O processing for synchronizing motion with external events. Modes of motion include point-to-point positioning, position tracking, jogging, contouring, electronic gearing, ECAM, and PVT.

The DMC-300xx provides optically isolated inputs and outputs as a standard feature. I/O include forward and reverse limit inputs, homing input, 8 uncommitted digital inputs, 4 uncommitted digital outputs, 2 uncommitted analog inputs and 1 uncommitted analog output. The DMC-300xx accepts position feedback from both a main and auxiliary encoder. Quadrature encoder feedback is standard with BiSS and SSI formats available as an option. A 115 kb RS232 port is also provided.

The DMC-30012 controller and 800W drive unit is $695 U.S. in single quantity and $445 U.S. in quantities of 100. The DMC-30010 controller-only unit is $295 U.S. in 100 quantities.

Low-cost ERD rod-style electric actuators now feature higher forces up to 500 lbs. and extended stroke lengths

The new ERD20 rod-style electric actuator from Tolomatic is designed with a larger diameter ball screw and a stroke length of up to 24inches (609.6 mm).  With this line extension, ERD rod-style electric actuators now deliver forces up to 500 pounds (2224 N).
