The EC-i 52mm brushless DC motor from maxon has had the iron-wound internal rotor motor redesigned from 7 pole pairs to 8 pole pairs. This significantly reduces the vibration and noise output of the DC motor. Available in three voltage outputs, 18, 24 and 48V the 52mm 180 W brushless DC motors produce up to 6,000 rpm.

With a correspondingly optimised magnet ring, the brushless EC-i motors with iron windings offer a very high torque density and a low cogging torque. The multi-pole internal rotor is extremely dynamic. It has a solid design, with a welded stainless steel flange and housing, making this brushless DC motor suitable for a wide range of applications such as rotary actuators, valves, robotic joints and process control.

New DMC-3×014-Box 1-Axis Controller box w/ internal 20W linear brushless servo drive w/ sine commutation

Galil DMC-30014Galil is introducing a new single axis linear drive package: the DMC-3×014. The new DMC-3×014 contains a 20W linear brushless servo drive with sinusoidal commutation. The transconductance linear amplifier has an operating gain of 0.2 A/V, with a current loop bandwidth of 4 kHz. The amplifier can drive brushless motors and voice coil motors operating at up to 1 Amp continuous, and 2 Amp peak at 15-40 VDC.

Trapezoidal commutation can have discontinuities and produce a torque ripple. This is because the torque characteristics of the motor are only taken into account in six zones. With sinusoidal commutation, the torque characteristics of the motor are mapped to all positions, resulting in continuous commutation with no torque ripple. As an additional benefit of sinusoidal commutation, Hall sensors are generally not required with Galil’s initialization commands.

As the DMC-3×014 uses a linear servo amplifier, it applies the full commanded voltage across the power transistors. There is no switching of the power as seen in PWM amplifiers. This minimizes electrical noise and the effects of motor inductance on the current ripple. This makes the DMC-3×014 ideal for using low inductance brushless motors and voice coil motors in low power applications.

The DMC-3×014 is available as an option for Galil’s DMC-30000 series of single axis controller/drive packages. The standard DMC-3×014 will use a 12 bit DAC, however there is a 16 bit option to increase the current resolution for systems with high feedback gain. A ‘–BRUSH’ option is also available, enabling the use of brush type motors. Designed to minimize space, cost and wiring, the drive reside directly inside the controller enclosure for a compact profile at a size of 3.88” x 5.00”. The U.S. list price of the DMC-3×014 is $695 US in single quantity and $445 US/ea in 100 quantities.

IAI‘s ROBO Cylinder® was adopted for equipment that performs both processes of applying silicon to a printed circuit board and press-fitting a cover.

While the printed circuit board is moved with the RCP3-SA5R on the bottom, the coating and press-fitting are performed with the RCA2-TW4N on the top.

Automating a manual process has doubled the production efficiency.

Also, the changeover became easy whenever the workpiece changed, which reduced the amount of man hours necessary.

Hybrid Servo motors are very well suited for Direct Drive applications – eliminating the need for gear heads in most applications.  These high torque motors match well to loads in the 500-2000 RPM speed range, typical of lead screws and belt drives, and can provide a significant increase in both power and efficiency over conventional servo motors in these speed ranges.

The PVIA control system includes patented damping methods to allow wide ranges of inertial mismatch without retuning or notch filters, reducing the need for inertial matching of the motor to the load. 100:1 inertial mismatch ratios are easily tuned.

The intuitive command language allows for easy program creation/modification/debug using the free QuickControl® environment available from their web site.  The programming environment provides for two programming threads in addition to an active motion.  Sophisticated programs can be easily implemented. Serial communications include MODBUS® RTU, 8bit ASCII, 9bit binary, and DMX512. CANopen® is simultaneously available with the serial options.

Seven IO are provided for external interfacing.  Programmable terminations allow the IO to be pulled high, pulled low, or floated while in input mode. All of the IO may also be used as analog inputs, with one channel also supporting 0-10v analog control.
