The EC-i 52mm brushless DC motor from maxon has had the iron-wound internal rotor motor redesigned from 7 pole pairs to 8 pole pairs. This significantly reduces the vibration and noise output of the DC motor. Available in three voltage outputs, 18, 24 and 48V the 52mm 180 W brushless DC motors produce up to 6,000 rpm.

With a correspondingly optimised magnet ring, the brushless EC-i motors with iron windings offer a very high torque density and a low cogging torque. The multi-pole internal rotor is extremely dynamic. It has a solid design, with a welded stainless steel flange and housing, making this brushless DC motor suitable for a wide range of applications such as rotary actuators, valves, robotic joints and process control.

Do you know the difference between these 10 types of servomotors?

Servomotors are generally used as a high performance alternative to the stepper motor. Stepper motors have some inherent ability to control position, as they have built-in output steps. This often allows them to be used as an open-loop position control, without any feedback encoder, as their drive signal specifies the number of steps of movement to rotate. This lack of feedback though limits their performance, as the stepper motor can only drive a load that is well within its capacity, otherwise missed steps under load may lead to positioning errors. The encoder and controller of a servomotor are an additional cost, but they optimize the performance of the overall system (for all of speed, power and accuracy) relative to the capacity of the basic motor. With larger systems, where a powerful motor represents an increasing proportion of the system cost, servomotors have the advantage….

maxon’s New BLDC Sterilizable Gearmotor EC 19 and GP 19M

High power up to 120 W, speeds up to 100,000 rpm, sterilizable 1000 times.

With its modular construction, this new brushless DC motor is available in three performance classes: the cost-optimized EC 19 at 60 Watt, the strong and high-speed EC 19 at 120 Watt and the sterilizable high-end version EC 19 at 120 Watt. The internals of the drives are responsible for their individual characteristics:

  • The EC 19 at 60 W is equipped with a magnetic circuit that is designed for speeds of up to 80,000 rpm. The maximum continuous torque is 12 mNm and the motor contains no Hall sensors.
  • The EC 19 at 120 W has been designed for speeds of up to 100,000 rpm and delivers a high continuous torque of 24 mNm. Versions with and without Hall sensors are available.
  • The EC 19 Sterilizable at 120 W may be sterilized in an autoclave 1000 times. With a maximum permissible speed of 100,000 rpm and 24 mNm continuous torque, this drive also withstands high temperatures and harsh steam cycles. This is achieved through careful selection of materials and through protection of the components such as in the hermetically sealed rotor magnet.

With maxon motor’s winding technology, it is possible to offer various voltage versions. The stator has been designed without slots. Therefore, no cogging torque occurs resulting in excellent control properties and extraordinarily smooth running. Together with an optimally balanced rotor, low-noise and low-vibration operation is easily achieved.

maxon’s new sterilizable planetary gearhead, the GP 19 M is ideal for applications requiring very high speeds – input speeds of up to 40,000 rpm. To accommodate such high speeds, the toothing and materials have been especially designed to minimize friction. A key demand placed on the material is 1000 sterilization cycles. Worth noting is the no-need to disassemble the motor for the sterilization process.   The new 19 mm servo motors are particularly suitable for surgical and dental devices, such as arthroscopic shavers and bone drills. There is also a focus on respirators and CAD/CAM spindle drives.

Servo motor sizing is often done with the help of a manufacturer’s sizing program, but it’s important to understand the three most critical factors—speed, torque, and inertia—to ensure you select the best-fit motor for the application.

Selecting the right servo motor for a linear motion system is a complex task, beginning with initial assumptions and component selections, which must be checked through a series of calculations and, in most cases, repeated over several iterations until a suitable combination of motor and mechanics is found. Most motor manufacturers offer online sizing tools that make the process easier, ensure that the best components are selected, and help preserve the design engineer’s sanity. But as a designer, or even an end user, it’s important to have an understanding of the three critical parameters of servo motor sizing: inertia, speed, and torque.
