The World’s Most Compact 3000 W Integrated Servo Motor

Birkerød, Denmark – JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control.  JVL’s newest additions to their portfolio is a complete, high-capacity MAC motor® with rating of 3000W.  MAC motor®s are complete servo systems including a high-dynamic AC servo motor, hall-sensors, encoder, power supply, driver and positioning controller and Nano-PLC, as well as facilities for incorporating various control modules such as Bluetooth, WLAN, ZigBee, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, Nano PLC, RS232/RS485/USB, Process Control, etc.

New Compact Motor

The MAC motor sets completely new standards for the performance and size of servo controls. With a length of only 311.8mm for a 3000W motor with a torque of 9.55/28.6Nm at 3000rpm, this MAC motor matches the size of traditional servo motors without built-in controllers with flange 130x130mm. This has only been possible through the use of extremely compact motors and the development of electronics and mechanics that utilise the latest technologies and manufacturing methods.  So what about vibrations and temperature? As with the other integrated servo motors in the range (50-3000W), both the motor and all electronic components have been specifically selected to withstand the rigorous demands required by industrial use.

Power Supply and Energy Savings

Powering this motor is easy since it only requires connection of the main voltage of 3x400VAC through the M23 connectors. Control voltage for the encoder and microprocessor circuitry is 24VDC: In an emergency-stop situation, where an approved relay has cut-off the main power, encoder position and other values are maintained by this control voltage.  In some applications, however, this is not needed and in those cases an optional internal 24VDC supply can be used, requiring only an AC main connection.  Furthermore highly effective switching technology is used to ensure low heat generation resulting in appreciable energy savings.

Other Advantages

One of the big advantages of using the integrated MAC motors is that you don’t need to install a separate servo driver or controller in a control cabinet. This gives you many subsequent advantages: Space savings in your control cabinet, saving of expensive motor and encoder cables, saving time (and money) for cabling, noise is minimized due to internal cabling and also installation errors between driver and motor are eliminated.  In addition, service is much easier, since the motor and controller can be replaced as a single integrated unit. Hence downtime is minimized and production is maximized.

Starting with a proven integrated motor design, we add a high-resolution incremental encoder and closed-loop servo firmware to create a motor that offers the best step motor performance available today. StepSERVO™ motors offer the same high-torque-at-low-speed and excellent holding torque characteristics of open loop stepping motors with the advantages of true closed-loop control. These advantages include the ability to create peak torques from the motor up to 50% higher than the normal torque range of the same step motor running open loop. New NEMA 17 and NEMA 23 Integrated Motor/Drivers from Nippon Pulse

Nippon Pulse America’s PRO Series NEMA 17 and NEMA 23 integrated motor/drivers are ideal for machine designs where an incorporated motor/driver helps conserve space.  These hybrid stepper motors with attached drive electronics yields a compact, RoHS compliant package.

PRO Series hybrid stepper motors are precision designed for medical technologies and semiconductor manufacturing applications.  They deliver accurate open loop control for high performance positioning applications.  Two models, PRO 42AP with 1/500 microstepping, and PRO 42BP with 1/8 microstepping are available.

The PRO series integrated driver solution can lower installed cost.  This motor/driver package provides high torque density and simplified operation through attached drive electronics.  This can remove the need to run motor power management cabling through the machine, and may reduce the potential for electrical noise.

These motors are available in case lengths of 40, 48, and 60 mm.  Depending on the case length, the PRO Series Size 17 motor can produce maximum holding torques (bipolar) ranging from 300 to 440 mNm.

The PRO Series is available in two models: AP 100,000 steps and BP 16,000 steps resolution.  Precision-honed stators and ground rotors for tight air gap and maximum performance; and simple, rugged, ball bearing construction provide high reliability and long service life.  An attached encoder is optional on both AP & BP models.  Selectable PFD (Percent of Fast Decay) is available with the advanced AP version.

Designers can use these integrated stepper motors to build laboratory analytical devices with motion control needs that may include stirring, fluidics, and sample selection.  Other applications for the PRO Series Integrated Motors include X-Y tables, semiconductor handling, telecommunications equipment, valve control, small machinery, and other automated devices that require precise remote controlled rotary movements in a compact package size.

Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Introduces IDEA Size 23 Programmable Linear Actuator

Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions has introduced the Haydon RoHS compliant IDEA™ Size 23 Non-captive Linear Actuator. The IDEA Size 23 linear actuator combines high-output force, rotary to linear motion, stepper drive and programmable control in a single integrated package. Linear travel per step ranges from 0.000125” (0.0031mm) to 0.005” (0.127mm) and output force up to 200 lbf (890N).

In addition to full programmability through an easy-to-use graphic user interface, the programmable linear actuator configuration is capable of up to 20” of stroke length with a variety of screw pitches allowing fine-resolution linear motion. The IDEA programmable linear actuator is perfect for small gantry robots, motion systems for optics and lasers, high-resolution imaging, precision fluid dispensing, and other applications requiring precision linear motion.
Programming the actuator is through the use of on-screen graphic buttons instead of complicated command sets or other proprietary programming languages. The software allows the system designer to easily troubleshoot programs through line-by-line or multiple-line program execution using the interactive debug feature. Inputs and outputs also can be simulated in software before ever connecting actual I/O hardware.

Other features include a single supply voltage of 12 to 75 VDC, 3.85Arms max rated current per phase with a 30% boost current capability for ramping, and 8 opto-isolated general purpose I/O. The inputs are rated for 5 to 24 VDC, 4mA max per input. The outputs are open collector, 5 to 24 VDC, 200mA maximum per output.

Integrated Stepper Motors Feature CANopen Connectivity

Applied Motion Products of Watsonville, CA have just released a new line of High Torque Integrated Stepper Motors with built-in CANopen communications. The STM24 Series is a Nema 24 frame hybrid step motor series with holding torque rated to 340 oz-in .

CANopen Integrated Stepper Motors from Applied Motion

CANopen is a standardized communication protocol for use in distributed automation control systems. It is a popular fieldbus option for applications that require the transmission of time-critical data to and from the devices on the network.

The STM24 CANopen Integrated Motors adhere to CAN in Automation (CiA) specifications DS301 and DSP402. Profile Position, Profile Velocity, and Homing modes are fully supported at data rates up to 1 Mbps. Applied Motion also provides specific CANopen objects for executing stored Q programs* and accessing internal data registers in the products.

Each STM integrates a NEMA step motor, microstepping drive and controller into a single device, offering savings on space, wiring and cost over conventional motor and drive solutions.

The “S” version models accept step and direction, analog input, joystick control, and streaming host commands using the SCL language. “Q” version models add stand-alone programmable operation using the Q programming language. This versatile language includes high-level features such as complex motion, multi-tasking, conditional programming, math functions, register access, and more. Both S and Q models offer RS-232 or RS-485 communication.

An optional 4000 count encoder, integrated into the motor housing, provides stall detection and stall prevention. Applied Motion’s proprietary stall prevention algorithm monitors rotor lag and automatically reduces speed and acceleration to avoid motor stalls, allowing 100% torque utilization.
