POSITAL Sensors – Precision Feedback for Collaborative Robots

Encoders measure rotation and return a digital signal that reports the angle of rotation (absolute encoders) or rate of motion (incremental encoders) to the control system. The ‘right’ encoders for cobots need to be accurate, reliable, and compact, with excellent dynamic response characteristics. They also need to be reasonably priced. POSITAL-FRABA has responded to this challenge by developing new sensing technologies – such as magnetic and capacitive rotary encoders – that provide cobot manufacturers vital feedback for closed-loop control systems. In order to ensure that these devices meet the needs of cobot builders, POSITAL-FRABA offers products with a wide range of performance characteristics, communications interfaces and physical configurations.

 

A very exciting development in the area of robotics is the development and growing popularity of so-called collaborative robots, or “cobots”. Cobots, in contrast to traditional industrial robots, are designed to interact with human workers in a shared workspace. They are typically smaller and less powerful than traditional factory robots and are equipped with a variety of proximity sensors, load sensors and other features designed to avoid dangerous collisions between the robots and the people working around them. This focus on safety means that cobots are easier to deploy in a normal factory setting, since they don’t required special fenced off operating areas. Cobots have been used to perform repetitive tasks in light assembly, packaging, materials handling and medical laboratories. Cobots have also been used to help workers avoid direct contact with environments not conducive to direct human interaction, such as high temperature environments, chemically aggressive reagents and toxic pathogens.

Enabling Technologies for the Cobot Revolution
Many cobots are designed to mimic a human arm, with flexible “shoulder”, “elbow” and “wrist” joints. Accurate measurement of the rotary position of these joints is central to enabling the cobots’ control system to keep track of the spatial orientation of all of its moving parts. This is typically provided through rotary encoders mounted in each of the device’s joints.

POSITAL has introduced a series of measuring wheel accessories for its IXARC family of rotary encoders. When one of these wheels is mounted on the shaft of an encoder, the result is an accurate and reliable instrument for measuring linear motion and position. “Rotary encoders do a great job of measuring rotary motion in shafts and other machine components,” comments Jarrod Orszulak, Product Manager at POSITAL-FRABA Inc. “However, for many motion control systems, accurate linear positioning is the main objective. With the new measuring wheels, we have a very convenient way of making linear displacement measurements while taking advantage of the proven performance of our extensive line of rotary encoders. This is a great solution for equipment positioning tasks or for cut-to-length applications.”

The new measuring wheels are available in circumferences of 200 mm and 500 mm. When fitted to multi-turn IXARC absolute encoders, this would translate into a linear measurement range of up to 500 kilometers! Three rim treatments are available – knurled aluminum, smooth polyurethane and textured (knobby) polyurethane – to ensure good traction between the wheel and a variety of surfaces.

Orszulak continues: “We are very excited about the combination of measuring wheels and our programmable incremental encoders.  With this arrangement, a user could define exactly how many pulses the instrument would produce for a defined unit of linear motion”. IXARC programmable encoders can be easily calibrated at the job site using POSITAL’s convenient UBIFAST programming tool.

POSITAL’s IXARC rotary sensors are available with V4A-rated stainless steel housings and IP69K-level environmental seals.  These rugged and versatile encoders are ideal for applications in the food and beverage industries since they can stand up to highly aggressive cleaning procedures and still deliver the reliability and measurement performance demanded by motion control systems.

The stainless steel housings are also available in explosion-proof (ATEX-rated) designs that can operate safely in environments with potentially dangerous levels of explosive dust or gases.  These models are ideal for grain or flour-handling facilities.

POSITAL encoders are available with a wide variety of output interfaces, ranging from analog to industrial Ethernet. The analog-output devices (also known as programmable potentiometers) are designed to function as a ‘drop-in’ replacement for conventional multi-turn potentiometers in simple control systems.  Because they are based on a magnetic sensor technology that requires no physical contact between measuring components, POSITAL encoders are immune from the wear and corrosion that can degrade the accuracy of conventional resistance-type pots.  Programmability means that they can be readily configured to meet each application’s exact requirements.

Industrial Ethernet connectivity, such as EtherNet/IP, provides a solid base for complex multi-sensor, multi-controller systems. POSITAL EtherNet/IP connected rotary sensors are ODVA-approved and are available in single or multi-turn versions with 16-bit resolution (65,536 steps/turn).

Quickly Program with any WiFi-Enabled Device

POSITAL’s new programmable incremental rotary encoders take versatility to a new level.  Resolution can be set anywhere from 1 to 16,384 pulses per turn in software, without changing the mechanical properties of the devices.  Similarly, pulse direction and the output driver – either Push-Pull (HTL) or RS422 (TTL) – can be defined through software parameters. Changes can be made quickly using POSITAL’s easy-to-use UBIFAST programming tool.  Device programmability is very significant for system integrators and machine builders since it helps them reduce inventories.  Now, they can hold a relatively small stock of ‘standard’ models and set them up for specific applications on an as-needed basis.

POSITAL has also introduced a unique Internet-enabled configuration management system for IXARC programmable encoders.  Whenever a device is reconfigured, the operator can register the changes with POSITAL through an automatic email interface.  POSITAL will update the configuration history of the device in a database maintained by the company.  If a replacement part is required, this record can be accessed and used to manufacture an encoder with an identical performance profile.  It could also be provided to a distributor or system integrator who could take a mechanically compatible device from their stock, enter the appropriate software parameters and deliver the completed unit directly to the end user.
