Acme Screw or Ball Screw Driven Linear Motion:
The Lintech 100 series linear positioning slides are designed to maximize performance while minimizing physical size and cost. These linear slides use a low friction, preloaded, recirculating linear ball bearing system, which ride on precision ground linear square rail guide. The linear profile rails are mounted to a precision machined aluminum base, which offers a rigid support over the entire travel of the table’s carriage. The load is mounted to a precision machined aluminum carriage, which has threaded stainless steel inserts for high strength and wear life.

There are 30 different acme & ball screw options, that offer high efficiencies and long life at an economical price. These linear positioning tables are designed to allow for numerous options. Tolomatic’s family of MXB electric belt-drive actuators includes a new solid bearing load-carrying design ideal for harsh environments.  The trapezoidal solid bearing provides a rigid, long-lasting bearing system capable of operating in environments that roller bearings would not be able to withstand.  With loads up to 520 lbs. (235 kg), speeds up to 100 in/sec (2.54 m/sec) and strokes up to 230 in (5.8 m), the MXB-S belt-drive actuators an economical solution for light- to moderate-loading applications requiring high duty cycle and high speeds over long strokes.  The MXB-S actuator can withstand light wash down.

“The trapezoidal solid bearing slides along the extrusion, acting as a wiper against contaminants that would clog up a roller bearing belt drive actuator,” said Nick Holmgard, product marketing engineer.

The MXB-S is available in six body sizes with in-line motor mounts as well as reverse parallel mounts with 3:1 timing belt reductions.  When paired with the ACS servo or stepper EtherNet/IP™-enabled drive and motor package, or with third-party motor and drive utilizing the Your Motor Here® program, the MXB-S actuator is easy to set up and integrate into many applications.

In addition to the MXB-S, Tolomatic’s MXB family of high-speed linear belt actuators, offering long strokes with optimal performance, include the MXB-U unguided belt-drive actuator for applications where loads are externally guided and supported, and the MXB-P heavy duty linear actuator with profiled rail bearing and belt-drive drive to achieve heavy loads and high speeds.

Positioning Stages for Vacuum Applications

Lintech custom vacuum stageLintech provides many different sized positioning tables, each available with lots of standard options.  One option which is not described much in any Lintech literature is that most of the screw driven tables offered can be supplied, in a customized variation, to meet some pretty significant vacuum environments.  Lintech has made many positioning tables for vacuum applications.  All of the standard components not already able to withstand vacuum environments can be substituted for the appropriate stainless product.

Lintech builds vacuum capable tables utilizing modified standard models or with complete custom designs.  As usual, the customer just needs to supply the application requirements and then Lintech try to use a “standard” table if suitable; otherwise a custom will be offered.

Embedding mechanical motion subsystems into machines improves
performance and reduces cost.

If you build machines, you probably work with actuators and positioning stages every day.  But do you truly get the best performance or lowest cost of ownership from these motion devices?  The answer may not be what you expect.

All too often, engineers think of stages or actuators as just another item on the bill of materials.  As long as the motion device nominally meets the desired positioning, force, payload, speed and cost requirements, it’s good to go.

With simple motion requirements, this approach to stage or actuator selection may yield acceptable results.  However, machines with complex mechanical motion requirements will benefit from an embedded motion design strategy.  Rather than a collection of electromechanical components, which may or may not work well together, embedded motion systems function as true plug-and-play machine subsystems.

Embedded motion systems are engineered to fit within a predefined physical space on a machine and tie into the machine’s motion control system, ready to accept commands from a top-level computer interface, control card or PLC.  At their simplest, embedded motion systems may consist of little more than a stage or actuator that has been connectorized to make the drop-in installation easier.  At their most complex, these motion subsystems extend from pinout to payload.  They encompass not only the motion device itself but also everything it carries…

From Air to Electromechanical

It’s not a big news story that the world’s population is getting exponentially bigger.  With this growth there is a greater demand for modern packaged foods.  A great example is India. It is projected that sales of package foods will almost double from $24.6B last year to $43.7B in 2016.  Many of the world’s largest food packaging conglomerates are ramping up for the worldwide push, and Lintech is there for them every step of the way, providing them parts that make their machines run 24-7, 365 days a year.

Lintech Product FamilyRecently the biggest trend to come out of the food processing is the switch from air-actuated cylinders to electromechanical cylinders.  There are a few reasons for this, but most importantly, going electromechanical is infinitely more reliable than using an air system.  Air systems need to be maintained constantly; if you don’t have clean air to run the system, your machines will not run at peak performance.

It may not seem like a big deal, but trust us, the costs to keep air systems running can be monumental, especially for companies just starting out.  It is only a matter of time before all food packagers around the world make the change.  Right now it is a big deal in places like India, because the growth has been so sudden and dramatic, there is no room for antiquated technology.
